Inpatient Rehabilitation
The goal of the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Center is to enable
individuals who have experienced disabling conditions due to injury or
illness reach their highest potential for recovery and return to their
homes and community. The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Team of health
care professionals has the special skills and training to assist
patients to become as independent as possible in their activities of
daily living.
Diagnosis Treated:
- Stroke
- Degenerative Neurological Disorders
- Hip Fractures

In addition to specific illnesses or injuries, people often suffer from
a number of conditions. The following is considered while creating a
comprehensive rehabilitation program for patients:
- Level of Confusion
- Risk of Falling
- Home and Community Safety Issues
- Swallowing and/or Speech Difficulties
- Bowel and Bladder Problems

- Old Illness that has caused physical impairment
Admission to Acute Rehabilitation
A physician, hospital discharge planner, insurance company case manager
or home health nurse may make referrals to the 15-bed Acute
Rehabilitation Center. A family member, friend or clergy member may
make referrals, but we will check with your family physician for
approval.
A patient's length of stay depends upon the individual; however, the
average length of stay is about 12 days. There are other rehabilitation
programs structured for longer stays. The program seeks to provide
structure for the patients, as well as a minimum of three hours of
therapy per day. When a patient is admitted into the program, he or she
will go through a thorough evaluation process to assess functioning in
every area of daily living. Rehabilitation will begin on the first day
and could include rehab trained nurses, occupational, physical and
speech-language therapies, either one-on-one or in-group sessions. Our
admission policy is similar to most insurance companies in that
“medical necessity” is such that a patient’s therapy program must be
delivered inside an acute hospital setting. Patients not discharged
home may be discharged to a Skilled Level Rehab program found in
Skilled Nursing Facilities.

The Acute Rehabilitation Team meets weekly in a Team Conference to
discuss patient goals and their progress. These team meetings provide a
forum for communication and discharge planning. The patient and family
are essential members of the rehabilitation team. Their input is used
in setting therapy goals while in the rehab program.
The Rehab Team Consists of:
Medical Director: The physician leads the clinical
team and coordinates the care of each patient while offering medical
direction to the rehabilitation team. The Physician is trained to
provide rehabilitative services in an acute hospital environment.
Rehabilitation Nurse: Our Nursing Team is led by a
CRRN (Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse) who holds a distinct
level certification in rehabilitative skills. The rehabilitation
nursing staff is available 24 hours a day to help the patient build
upon skills learned in therapy. The goal of the nursing staff is to
assist the patient to become as independent as possible while meeting
their medical needs. This is a combination of RNs (24/7), LPNs, and
Patient Care Techs to assist with personal needs of each patient.
Social Worker/Case Manager: The Social Worker works
with the rehab team to assist the patient and family with information
related to the patient's progress, goals, and discharge plan.
Occupational Therapist: The Occupational Therapist
trains each patient and help them achieve a safe level of functioning
in basic self care skills such as bathing, dressing, feeding as well as
homemaking, work and leisure activities as appropriate. Range of
motion, muscle strengthening, cognitive retraining, therapeutic
activities and adaptive equipment may be used to maximize a person's
potential to reach functional and safe independence.
Physical Therapist: The Physical Therapist
focuses on assisting the patient to achieve the highest level of motor
functioning possible. Evaluation and treatment may include muscle tone
assessment, movement, strength, coordination and ambulation. The
Physical Therapist will help determine a person's equipment needs and
will provide training in the use of new equipment.
Speech-Language Pathologist: A Speech-Language
pathologist may work with patients to improve difficulties involving
oral motor control, speech, language, memory, problem solving and
cognitive skills. The Speech-Language Pathologist works with patients
who have a communication disorder, swallowing and/or feeding
difficulties.
Psychologist: A psychologist is available as needed to
assist the patient and/or family in coping with the various
psychological and emotional challenges associated with illness or
injury.
Dietician: The Registered Dietician and the Physician
work with the Rehab Team to implement plans to enable the patient to
receive the nutrition required to heal, improve health and fully
participate in the rehab program.
Program Directors: Program Directors evaluate the
efficiency of the program and clinical outcomes of each patient and the
program for Performance Improvement initiatives. All Acute Inpatient
Rehab Units in the U.S. are considered “distinct part units”, meaning
they are licensed separately from the other hospital departments and
have separate rules and regulations. The WRMC Rehab Team consists of
three managers ensuring all patients are appropriate for the services
they are receiving and that all aspects of their care meet standards
set by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehab Facilities (CARF),
Medicare Standards, and the Arkansas Department of Health and Human
Services.
Other Physician Consultants as appropriate to assist with medical concerns and treatment.
