WRMC Awarded for Quality Care

(Batesville, Ark.)—The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recognized White River Medical Center, along with 218 other hospitals nationwide, for excellence in patient care.

Designed to improve the processes used to care for patients, the Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration (HQID) measured each hospital’s performance in the delivery of care based on accepted best practices for patients with pneumonia, heart attack, heart failure, and care of patients undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery. WRMC received a total of five awards from CMS based on year six results. As a result of these demonstrated successes, WRMC will receive a bonus payment in the amount of $40,529 from CMS. WRMC voluntarily joined the project in 2005.

"We joined the HQID project to reinforce our commitment to quality healthcare, to share ideas, and to learn from the best hospitals in the country," said Gary L. Bebow, Administrator/CEO at White River Medical Center. "The recognition from CMS validates our efforts and ultimately improves our ability to provide quality care to our patients."

HQID is the first national project of its kind designed to determine if economic incentives to hospitals are effective in improving the quality of inpatient care.

WRMC received the awards from CMS for its performance attainment, top performance, and improvement. The Attainment Award is given to hospitals that attain or exceed the median level benchmark from two years prior. The Top Performance Award is for the top 20 percent of hospitals in each clinical area, and will earn them an additional incentive payment. The Top Improvement Award is for hospitals that attain median level performance and are among the top 20 percent of hospitals with the largest percentage quality improvements in each clinical area.

WRMC is a 199-bed regional referral center and the flagship facility of White River Health System (WRHS). WRHS is a not-for-profit healthcare system serving residents throughout North Central Arkansas. The system includes hospitals, outpatient facilities, rural health clinics, primary care and specialty physician offices, home health and hospice care, long-term care facilities and a medical equipment company. White River Health System is a member of the Premier Alliance, the American Hospital Association, and the Arkansas Hospital Association and is licensed by the Arkansas Department of Health.
