WRMC PROS Therapy Provides Aquatic Therapy

(Batesville, Ark.)  – WRMC PROS (Physical Rehab Outpatient Services) Therapy now offers Aquatic Therapy at the Batesville Community Center and Aquatic Park.  An agreement between the City of Batesville and White River Medical Center created the opportunity for WRMC PROS therapy to add aquatic therapy.

Aquatic Therapy is a form of Physical Therapy performed in a warm therapy pool.  This form of therapy allows a patient to work their joints without the impact of Physical Therapy performed on land.  The warm water helps to dilate blood vessels, improving circulation and facilitate muscle relaxation.

Physicians or other providers may refer patients to aquatic therapy as an alternative to traditional physical therapy. Injured athletes, obese persons, fibromyalgia and arthritis sufferers, pre/postnatal women, and those with fragile bones are examples of patients who may benefit from Aquatic Therapy.  It is beneficial to patients who may not be capable of comfortably and safely performing exercise on land.

The viscosity of the water provides resistance and helps rebuild muscle memory by allowing the muscles to focus on moving properly through its full range of motion. A patient cannot move as quickly during aquatic therapy, allowing them to concentrate on how their body is moving.  Water helps to stimulate body awareness, balance and trunk stability. The water increases support which helps a person stand and can decrease fear of falling. This allows the therapist to be able to challenge a patient's balance in ways that wouldn't be possible on land.  Buoyancy of the water helps reduce the effects of gravity. Buoyancy of water decreases the amount of force transmitted through your bones, joints and ligaments compared to land based exercise.  In deep water activities, there is no impact with the ground and therefore no force to the body.  The increased blood flow during Aquatic Therapy also carries lactic acid away from muscles helping to ease soreness and promote healing.

Physical Therapist Betty Bradley, PT, GCS and Physical Therapy Assistant Jenny Landers, PTA are certified life guards.

Aquatic Therapy is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30AM to 11AM. To seek treatment, speak with your Primary Care Provider or Specialist regarding referral.   To contact the WRMC PROS Therapy, call (870) 262-1271.
